Soon I will be driving my daughter back to school (or maybe I already have by the time you read this) for her sophomore year of college. Her first day of school will also represent her first day of her 20’s. Earlier this summer, we discussed the aspect of “growing up” when you reach the end of your teen years and what responsibilities go along with a person entering their third decade of life.

But what exactly does this mean? Drinking legally? (next year, OF COURSE)

Being responsible for your actions?  (Hopefully, there are already a few years under her belt)

Working hard in school?  (Not an issue) 

Being accountable to yourself and others? Ah, now that’s a biggie!! Read more

As the Major League Baseball All Star Game took center stage in the baseball world (Congrats to the American League for winning and securing home field advantage in the World Series….and congrats to our SEVEN Royals All Stars!), it symbolizes the “halfway” point in the season.

This time also represents the “halfway” point in the world I live and work in….the property tax world. For the most part, the compliance season for filing business personal property statements has finished.

Many states have completed their informal appeals cycle and, in some jurisdictions, tax rolls are being certified and tax bills are beginning to be processed.

Now it’s time to take a breath and get ready for the second half. It should be a busy one. Read more

A Personal Note…

The other day I attended a stone setting for my uncle who passed away 18 months ago. It was a very simple ceremony attended by a small group of family members and I’m sure my uncle wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Quiet, unassuming and to the point.

During his life, he was a difference maker; starting from humble beginnings to the creation of one of the largest, publicly-held real estate investment trusts in North America.

To me, he was always the same person – quiet and unassuming, but passionate about his affairs, both professional and civic. He was a true example of how to live one’s life. I hope I’ve learned these same traits and effectively use them in my life; professionally, from a civic standpoint and personally. Read more
